In this post: Fun spring activities for kids to stay entertained while indoors or outdoors.

Looking for ways to enjoy the spring weather or need fun things for your kids to do during the gloomy spring days?

Whether you’re looking for something educational, sensory stimulating, or energy burning, there are plenty of activities on this list to choose from.

For your convenience, I’ve separated this list into sections by outdoor and indoor activities, as well as a few rainy day activities.

So, take on spring break this year with confidence with this list of over 25 spring activities to keep your kids entertained while disconnected from the WiFi.

Spring Activities For Kids

OUTDOOR SPRING ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS

1. Feed the birds

Gather some bird food, a small container for each child, and scoopers or spoons. Separate the bird food into each container and make sure each child has a scooper/spoon.

Then, go bird hunting! Whether it be in your backyard or a local trail or park. Allow your kids to pour some bird food all around with the scoopers.

For some sensory fun in this activity, allow your kids to explore the bird food with their hands before sprinkling it all around.

2. Grab the bubbles

What kids don’t like bubbles?? Go to town blowing bubbles and have a little competition of who can collect more bubbles.

3. Chalk art

When the sun comes out, so does the chalk. Let your child’s inner Picasso come out and enjoy making some art or creating a game of hopscotch.

4. Gardening

Introduce gardening to your kids! Grab some mini pots, paint, soil, and seeds.

Have your kids paint and sign their pots so they can easily find which one is theirs!

Plant seeds like greens, beans, and peas since they’re usually easy to grow.

5. Nature walk

Keep it simple and just go on a walk. Talk about the things you see in your environment as the seasons change.

To make it more fun, play a game of ISpy, scavenger hunt, or collect rocks.

6. Try out new parks & playgrounds

Kids love getting to explore new playgrounds since everything is “new.”

Try finding parks with things to do that your child doesn’t see often like hiking trails or obstacle courses.

7. Play sports

Play some sports like baseball, soccer, or football in your backyard, neighborhood, or open fields.

8. Hike nearby nature trails

Find some local nature trails, put on some comfy shoes, grab your water, and go on a family hike.

9. Stomping and playing in the rain

Kids LOVE jumping in puddles and playing in the rain.

But, if you want to avoid having the kids in the rain, here are some great rainy day activities to do instead.

10. Tree climbing

Find a tree and let your kids explore their limits (monitored of course). Climbing trees is important for your child’s development and helps improve balance, coordination, and strength.

It also challenges your kids and is adventurous!

11. Visit a pond

Visiting some ponds near you will open plenty of opportunities for exploration, interaction, and education.

Kids enjoy getting to see the frogs and fish in their environment and even catching tadpoles in buckets.

12. Roll down grass hills

If you’ve ever done this as a child, you’d understand why it’s on this list of spring activities for kids.

Rolling down hills is a great outdoor activity for sensory seekers and another fun way to improve balance.

Find a hill where your kids won’t have a hard time stopping at the bottom and the hill itself isn’t too steep.

13. Visit the farmers market

Let your child take the lead at your local farmers market. There’s so much for them to learn and explore.

They can speak to local farmers about where their food comes from, how it’s made, and get to pick the food they bring home.

14. Lunch picnic

Grab a blanket, basket (or lunch bag, nothing fancy), some snacks and sandwiches.

Go to your child’s favorite park or right in the backyard and set up your picnic.

To make the most out of your picnic you can bring some books, puzzles, or be prepared to tell a story.

15. Cloud finding

While on a walk, picnic, rolling down hills, or hanging out in your backyard, lay on the grass and watch the clouds.

It’s a good way to ground your child while keeping them occupied by calling out shapes in the clouds.

16. Jump rope, hula hoop, hopscotch

Have a mini field day in your backyard or in an open field near your home. Set up activities like jump rope, chalk, and hula hoops.

Play some music and just enjoy the weather!

17. Play a game of tag

Who doesn’t love a game of tag? My 5 year old could LITERALLY go all day if her “old mom” could keep up.

But, what makes a game of tag more fun? When it’s outside and there are more places to run!

18. Family bike ride

Grab some water and take a good bike ride around the neighborhood or find a new bike path to check out.

INDOOR SPRING ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS

19. Dye Easter eggs

Another spring activity kids could do all day, Easter egg decorating.

Even if you don’t celebrate Easter, egg decorating can be done with any theme and your child’s creativity will really take over.

20. Spring cleaning

Before you laugh and scroll past this activity, let me first tell you why spring cleaning is on this list.

Believe it or not, some kids actually do enjoy cleaning. Especially spring cleaning.

Open up the windows, give everyone a task, let them get into their zone with their favorite playlists, and get it done together.

Younger kids love helping around the house as long as they think they’re the ones making the decisions.

Older kids love a good room refresh and fresh floors to throw their dirty laundry on.

Make it fun and it’ll get done!

21. Rainy day spring activities

With spring comes rain..lots and lots of rain.

So, if it’s one of those rainy days that you don’t want to bring the kids anywhere and everything is just…bleh, I created this list of fun rainy day activities for kids.

22. Spring themed crafts

Bring out the popsicle sticks pompoms and glitter, and let the crafts begin.

From bunnies and flowers to bugs and frogs, there are endless crafts your kids can create.

23. Sensory bin spring activities

My kids LOVE sensory bins. There are so many options to choose from like:

  • sand
  • shredded paper
  • uncooked oats
  • dyed rice
  • rocks

To keep it spring themed, I created this spring garden for my kids with all items from the Dollar (.25) Tree!

Here’s what’s in this bin:

  • black beans (2 bags)
  • white beans (1 bag)
  • green dyed uncooked rice (1 cup)
  • plastic flowers
  • mini bunny figurines
  • Carrot trees (2 packs)
  • mini mushrooms (1 pack)

Again, this is ALL from the dollar (.25) tree, including the bin!

Green Rice Recipe:

  • Step 1: In a large ziploc bag, combine 2 tbsps of vinegar and 10 drops of green food coloring
  • Step 2: Pour in 1 cup of rice
  • Step 3: Shake everything up until all the rice is dyed
  • Step 4: On a paper towel topped plate, evenly pour out your dyed rice
  • Step 5: Allow to dry (about 3 hours)

This bin kept my kids occupied for 5 hours.

INDOOR SPRING ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS

24. Visit a museum, activity center or library

Plan a trip to try out new museums, activity centers, or libraries that everyone in the family can enjoy together.

25. Go see a movie

Every once in a while, it’s fun to pause the regular nighttime routine and instead go see an after dinner movie.

The kids get excited because they’re “skipping” bedtime, and you get to eat popcorn & snacks!

26. Puzzle scramble

Gather up a few of your child’s favorite puzzles and mix up the pieces.

It requires them to think more as they sort through all of the pieces to figure out which piece goes to what puzzle & where.

27. Science experiment

A quick, easy, and fun science experiment: baking soda and vinegar.

Put a twist on it and gather a few small bowls. At the bottom of each bowl put a few drops of dye using a different color in each bowl.

Scoop a few spoons of baking soda on top of the dye in each bowl and pour vinegar into a cup that’s easy to pour from.

Let your kids pour the vinegar (or use a turkey baster) into each bowl after trying to guess which color will come out.

Watch their excitement as they get a colorful volcano each time!
